Chinese New Year is the biggest yearly festival of the Chinese communities. Each new Chinese calendar year is represented by one of twelve animals from the Chinese zodiac: the Dog, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Ox, Pig, Rabbit, Ram, Rat, Rooster, Snake, and Tiger.
Traditionally during the lead up to the Chinese New Year people clean their houses, repay debts, buy new clothes and have their hair cut. On the eve of the New Year a celebration meal with many traditional dishes is served. The New Year is welcomed with fireworks and firecrackers
London’s Chinese New Year celebration start with a parade, the same way as it is celebrated in China, starting from the Strand in the city centre and it continuing to Shaftesbury Avenue. The main celebrations take place in Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square, with many events taking place as the parade passes through the city of London.
