Waterloo Bridge crosses the River Thames in London, between Blackfriars Bridge and Hungerford Bridge. The bridge is named in memory of the British victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The bridge offers views of Westminster, the South Bank, London Eye, the City of London and Canary Wharf, thanks to its location at a strategic bend in the river.
Prior to the present structure, in 1817, there was a granite toll bridge. The current Portland stone bridge was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott - the architect responsible for designing the iconic red telephone boxes and remodelling of Battersea Power Station, and has been operational since 1945.
