The London Borough of Barnet is a borough in the north of London and forms part of Outer London.
Barnet is one of London’s largest boroughs and is also home to the Hendon Aerodrome, the birthplace of British aviation, and today the RAF Museum. This spectacular museum offers visitors the chance to view over 70 real sized aircrafts, a flight simulator, “Touch and Try” Jet Provost trainer and the Eurofighter 2000 theatre.
There are two Grade 1 listed buildings in Barnet, both designed by Edwin Lutyens: the Church of St Jude (the parish church of Hampstead Garden Suburb with a Gothic spire) and the Free Church, similar in design to the previous but with a concrete dome. Barnet was first made famous in 1471 by the Battle of Barnet between troops supporting the Duke of York, led by Edward IV and the men of the rebel Richard Neville. It also played home to the pre-eminent writer and historian of his day, Samuel Pepys.
Today Barnet is a mix of cultures with the UK’s largest Jewish community and large African and Asian populations.
